Jeff Holmes

Jeff Holmes is finishing up his senior year at Marist College, where he is majoring in journalism with a minor in political science. Originally from Essex, Ct. a small town located in southeastern Connecticut, Jeff now has his sights set on the cities of Chicago, Washington D.C. and New York City after finishing up school. Jeff has a strong passion for journalism and the media, as well as politics and the government. While his immediate plan after college is to get a job as a journalist, Jeff hopes to see himself one day working as a Communications Director for Senator or Congressman. Jeff attributes this desire to his love of the show The West Wing, which he claims romanticized the idea of working for the government in a way he couldn’t refuse.

Jeff has a fascination with the relationship of the media and the government, has only been bolstered since his time at Marist. Originally planning to attend the United States Naval Academy, Jeff views working in the government as another great way to serve his country. At Marist Jeff founded and is the current president of the Marist Society of Professional Journalists chapter. He started this program a year ago and has seen membership increase from 12 to 35 in one semester. Jeff is currently a student assistant to the Director of Social Media and Online Initiatives Brian Apfel at Marist. His daily duties consist of regularly posting to the Marist Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pintrest pages. Jeff works with Mr. Apfel to develop new and different ways to communicate with prospective students and inform them about Marist. Jeff is also editor-in-chief of Marist’s blog Marist Fox Tales. Along with a team of bloggers, Jeff helps generate content to best show what daily life is like for Marist students.

Jeff is also heavily involved within the Marist Admissions office where he is president of the Marist Ambassador program and a tour guide. Jeff has the pleasure of serving as an officer on the Class of 2014 Senior Class Gift Committee this year as well.A lifelong Cleveland sports fan, which has consisted of a lifetime of disappointment, Jeff loves kayaking, playing different sports, reading, rock climbing, hanging out with friends and catching up on his Netflix que in his spare time.

Garrin Marchetti

Garrin is a senior at Marist College, located in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., where he is majoring in Communications, with concentrations in both Journalism and Sports Communication.

Garrin has become very involved in the journalism and media field, both at Marist and in the professional field. Currently, he is the Editor-in-Chief of The Circle, the Marist student newspaper, where I previously served as the sports editor and a staff writer, respectively. He has also been heard on the campus radio station WMAR as the co-host of his own sports talk show, “Boston vs. New York,” as well as the Marist College Television (MCTV) shows “The Red Fox Rumble” and “The Marist Sports Talk Network.”

Garrin has also attended several professional media meetings and conferences, including the Associated Press Sports Editors conference and Marist College Media Leaders Program conference.

In addition to his interest in sports, Garrin has developed in interest in politics and political journalism. He considers himself an independent, and has found that college students need to be informed about the news in Washington because they are the generation that is being most affected by the changes happening there. This is why Garrin decided to be a part of Pizza Boxes and Politics: to help his fellow classmates become informed.

Garrin is a native of Reading, MA, and is a passionate Boston sports fan. If you would like to contact him, his email is Garrin.Marchetti1@marist.edu
